Replacing Stem & Disc in Index Valve

If your automatic lawn sprinkler sytem does not have electric valves and a digital timer, then your probably have a mechanical controller with a dial timer and built in pump-start-relay that uses an index valve to switch zones. To switch to another zone your have to turn the controller off and then turn it back on again. You normally have to wait 15 seconds to a minute and then it should switch zones. If it is getting stuck on one zone and not switching then your disc inside the index valve is probably worn out. While at it, you may as well replace the stem also. This is a very common repair that I get paid for many times a week, but you can do it yourself easily if you feel up to it! The steps and procedures to replacing your stem and disc are:

  • 1. Remove the screws or bolts from the top of the index valve using a screwdriver or powerdrill with proper bit.
  • 2. Gently pry the top cover of the index valve off. Some models may require you to carefully shift the top counter-clockwise approximately 1/4 turn. These types or usually the plastic model index valves, not metal.
  • 3.Remoe the old stem & disc.
  • 4.Install the new PROPER stem & disc.
  • 5.Put the cover back on, align correctly, then install and tighten the screws.

Above is a video of showing you the steps that I just mentioned on how to change the stem and disc in your index valve. An automatic irrigation sytem like this has less overall maintenance compared to an electric valve system with a digital timer, but you also have less options and control with it. Another very common system modification task that I do is converting from the index valve and dial timer system to an electric valve and digital timer system. We call it an "Index to Electric Upgrade". If you live in our service area, feel free to call us for a price quote.

Replacing the stem and disc inside your index valve is a simple task that you can do yourself as long as you have the will and a screw driver. Hopefully my video clip on this common irrigation system repair has showed you how to accomplish this sprinkler system maintenance yourself.
